Pat has the distinction of being the first secretary of the original Arts & Crafts organisation. Born in Victoria, she worked in Myer’s stores in Melbourne prior to the war. At the outbreak of war, Pat was one of hundreds of women who took on jobs previously held by men only and she became a tram conductress. In 1945, Pat married a dashing young airman, Arthur James Batt, and moved to the west. After the war they bought a farm in Marradong which they named “Warrendyte” after a holiday spot in the Dandenongs. Pat tells the story of her arrival in the west and wishing to be near her husband at Pearce took a job at the hotel, the only way she could get accommodation at the time. In those days for a young woman to cross the threshold of a hotel, let alone work or live there was not done and the young couple went to great lengths to keep this fact from the rest of the family. Pat and Bil now live in semi retirement in the township, while son John and his family live on “Warrendyte”.
